Challenges of the Deep Freeze
Winter rehabilitation requires significantly more resources than any other time of year. Maintaining an animal’s body weight and health during sub-zero temperatures is a resource-intensive commitment.
Contributions to the Overwintering Fund support:
High-Calorie Diets: Specialized winter nutrition to help larger mammals, like black bears, maintain the fat reserves necessary for health and dormancy.
Winter-Proofing & Bedding: Natural insulation, thick layers of straw, and specialized den-lining materials to keep enclosures dry and wind-proof.
Temperature Regulation: Covering the energy costs of climate-controlled rooms for sensitive species like bats, who require precise conditions to survive the winter.
Snow Management: Ensuring our team can safely access and service enclosures during heavy storms to provide fresh water and medical check-ups.
Waiting for the Thaw
Overwintering isn't just about survival; it’s about preparation. By providing a safe haven during the harshest months, we ensure these animals are at their strongest when spring finally arrives and they can be successfully returned to their homes.
"Nature doesn't stop because of a storm, and neither do we. This fund provides the 'winter coat' our residents need to make it to the other side of the freeze."
